2010 Champagne Classic Nominations

May 18th, 2010

This Saturday Doomben Racecourse hosts the next elite meeting of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, Kirks Doomben Cup Day.

Seven excellent Group races are planned for the meeting, including the feature race for two-year-olds, the $150,000 Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m).

Twenty-seven up-and-coming juveniles have been nominated for the 2010 Champagne Classic including the impressive last start winner of the $100,000 Listed Ken Russell Memorial (1200m) at the Gold Coast, Spirit Of Boom.

The victory by the two-year-old Sequalo colt was an amazing improvement after he missed the start and ran 14th to Military Rose in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast back in January, and he is likely to start as one of the favourites in the Champagne Classic if he runs.

Another nominee is the horse that ran second to Spirit Of Boom in the Ken Russell, classy Shovhog colt Adebisi.

Also looking to back up from the same race is fourth placegetter and stablemate of Magic Millions winner Military Rose, the Gillian Heinrich-trained Audacious Spirit. Yet to win a race, the Bel Esprit colt has had just two career starts and will be eager to break through with their maiden win.

Gold Coast based trainer Heinrich has also nominated General Shareef for the Champagne Classic, the General Nediym two-year-old also seeking their first career victory.

Another two talented nominees for the 2010 Champagne Classic are the pair that quinelled the Listed Dequetteville Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville on May 2, Broadway Harmony and Jesse’s Girl.

Other top two-year-olds seeking a start on Saturday include unbeaten Mossman gelding Buffering and Lee Freedman’s promising Encosta De Lago colt Smokin’ Joey.

The headline event at Saturday’s meeting will be the $500,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2020m) where the Chris Waller-trained Metal Bender is the current pre-race favourite at $3 with Ladbrokes.com.au.

Other exciting races scheduled on the day include the $175,000 Group 3 Doomben Roses (2020m) and the $125,000 Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m).

The final field for the 2010 Champagne Classic will be announced later in the week and published here. In the meantime get in and check out the early odds for the Doomben races at our preferred online bookmaker Ladbrokes.com.au.
