A talented field of 11 has been confirmed to line up for this weekend’s Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) at Brisbane’s Doomben Racecourse, highlighted by several noted performers over the 2014 autumn carnival.
Chasing further success in two-year-old events this year, trainer Gerald Ryan has confirmed Time For War for a maiden appearance north of the border in this weekend’s Champagne Classic, ahead of the major target of the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) on June 7th.
Claiming two impressive wins from just three competitive starts so far, Time For War will have to overcome the slightly awkward barrier 10 if to continue his exceptional run of form in the Champagne Classic.
Debuting with an impressive turn of foot to comfortably claim the CFMEU Mining & Energy Plate (1100m) in November, the Snitzel colt has returned to racing in typically strong form this season; winning the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) on March 29th before overcoming poor position rounding onto the final straight to finish fourth in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) last time out.
Confirmed to be partnered by regular jockey this weekend, apprentice Damien Thornton, Time For War offers Ryan a strong chance of success this weekend.
Trainer John O’Shea is set to dominate the running of the 2014 Champagne Classic, having accepted positions in the final field for talented stable mates Mohave and Shaumari.
Unlucky to finish second behind Law in the Listed Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate (1000m) on debut in October, Mohave has continued racing in impressive fashion; winning the Listed Blue Diamond C&G Preview (100m) and finishing sixth amongst particularly classy company in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) last time out on February 22nd.
Allocated barrier 8, the Exceed And Excel colt will be partnered by in-form jockey James McDonald and is a legitimate frontrunner this weekend.
Contesting just two race starts to date, Shaumari will be aiming to continue her impressive career start this weekend, having won the Get Racy Maiden (1100m) on debut before finishing third behind fellow Champagne Classic acceptor Eloping in the Group 3 Royal Randwick Stakes (1200m) most recently.
One of the big winners of all leading chances at Wednesday’s barrier draw, Shaumari will leave from gate five with talented jockey Kerrin McEvoy on board.
The most experienced runner confirmed in the final field for the 2014 Champagne Classic, Eloping has claimed an impressive four wins and one place from just seven competitive starts to date.
Claiming back-to-back victories in her two maiden racing appearances, which included the Listed Blue Diamond Fillies Preview (1000m), the Choisir filly was unlucky to finish just in the red of leading two-year-old Earthquake in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m), continuing on her strong run of form towards her Royal Randwick Stakes triumph last time out.
With regular jockey Stephen Baster confirmed to make the trip to Brisbane this weekend, Eloping will leave from barrier 7.
