May 11th, 2016

Ten runners have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s 2016 Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben Racecourse; highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Brisbane Winter Carnival’s most exciting two-year-old prospects.

Nikitas has stamped himself as one to watch through a short but impressive racing career so far and will jump from the ideal barrier 5 in the 2016 Champagne Classic.

Debuting to racing for an impressive win in the Canadian Club Handicap (1200m) on December, Nikitas charged home to finish third in the Group 3 McLachlan Stakes (1200m) before running a close second to Capitalist in the Magic Millions 2.y.o Guineas (1200m) on January 9th.

Godolphin has travelled a strong contingent north for the Brisbane Winter Carnival and will be represented in two-year-old ranks by Souchez, who has been confirmed in the 2016 Champagne Classic field.

Trialling well in the lead-up to his competitive debut, Souchez immediately stamped himself as one to watch with a dominant performance for success in the Schweppes Plate (1100m) at Rosehill on December 19th.

Having immediately returned to the paddock, the son of Lonhro resumed this time for third in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) before taking out the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) in impressive fashion on March 12th.

Reportedly taking plenty of benefit from his subsequent freshen-up, Souchez will leave from barrier 2 in the Champagne Classic with in-form hoop Jason Collett in the saddle.

Chris Waller has experienced notable success in two-year-old races through recent editions of the Brisbane Winter Carnival, and has confirmed Earth in the 2016 Champagne Classic field.

Earth debuted to racing for second in the Schweppes Maiden Plate (1100m) on February 3rd, but faded late when fifth in the More Than Just Winning Maiden (1200m) on April 13th.

Having returned to competitive form with a strong run for third in the 1st Light Horse Maiden Plate (1400m) last time out, the son of Redoute’s Choice will leave from barrier 6 with veteran hoop Glyn Schofield in the saddle.
